How to Work From Home

There are hundreds of distractions while working from home, and it can be difficult to stay focused and get work done. Kids, chores, food within a few feet, TV… all of these can distract you from the tasks at hand. I struggled to figure out how to work from home when I first started doing so. I wanted to share a few things that helped me transition to a work-from-home lifestyle. Let’s get into it!

Put Away Distractions

As much as possible, at least. When you sit down to work on something, put your phone away and on silent. That way, you won’t be tempted to check notifications that come in while you’re trying to focus.

Kids are a whole other story. If you’re a parent, you know what I’m talking about. They come and go and do as they please. Something that has worked for me is having someone (a relative, friend, neighbor, etc.) watch my kids for a few hours. It’s not much, but it gives me the time to sit down and get work done without a little one coming in for attention. I know this may not be possible for some people, but try to give yourself the space to focus. Work during their nap time or set up a playdate.

Time Block

Just like how meetings are on your calendar, block off time to complete certain tasks. You’ll get a reminder that it’s time to work on something. It may be for 30 minutes or an hour, but it’s dedicated time to complete something. When you sit down and focus on one thing, you’ll be more productive. I recommend turning off notifications during these time blocks, so you aren’t tempted to check an email that comes in during this time.

Set Start And Stop Times

This is crucial to efficiently work from home. It can be so easy to fall into the trap of finishing just one more thing. All of a sudden, it’s 10pm, and you’re exhausted. Create an environment that mimics an office. You wouldn’t stay until 10pm in an office (or at least I hope not!). Setting the start and stop times sets a boundary for yourself and your clients. Let them know your hours. That way, they won’t expect a reply from you after hours.

Have a Dedicated Work Space

Again, I realize this isn’t possible for some people but try as hard as you can to have a specific spot to work. As much fun as it is to sit in bed or on the couch to work, are you really that productive? Have a spot to work that you can walk away from when you’ve finished working for the day. That will make it feel like you’re “leaving” work and can unplug.

I know it can be difficult to work from home. As much as possible, create a work environment that allows you to focus during the day, and walk away from when the workday is over. That has really helped me stay productive while working from home. I hope these tips will help you stay productive and focused at home!
